Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst in H&E transverse section showing 2 brood capsules containing protoscoleces and the outer bright red staining, thick fibrous wall produced by the host surrounding the thinner, pink- staining laminated layer below which is the thin, germinal epithelial layer from which arise these brood capsules. Humans become infected by accidently ingesting food contaminated by dog (canine) faeces containing the eggs of the adult tape worm. The liberated embryo penetrates the intestinal mucosa with 66 percent of cysts lodging in the liver. The usual intermediate host is sheep or cattle or other herbivores such as kangaroos.
